The Snug Teddy

A hug in teddy form

When a child enters care, everything can feel new and unfamiliar. New home. New faces. New rules. Even if a child’s family is supportive, change can be overwhelming and sometimes lonely.

Snug is there for those moments. Snug is more than a teddy, it’s a companion, a friend, and a source of comfort a child can hold close when everything else feels different.

Where the Idea Came From

Snug was created from a deep understanding of the importance of attachment and relationships in a child’s life. Many children experience disruption or loss when they move into care, and even small changes can feel unsettling.

Each Snug is transactional, it belongs only to the child, giving them a safe, personal comfort item they can rely on without rules or ownership conflicts.

It’s inspired by the moments that matter most: a first night in a new home, a difficult day, or a quiet moment when a child just needs a friend to hold.

Why Snug Matters

Being in care can bring a mix of emotions. Children may feel anxious, unsure, or in need of something familiar and reassuring. Snug helps by offering:

  • Comfort during big transitions,  a soft, gentle friend to hold through first nights and new experiences.

  • Connection and reassurance, a consistent presence that supports attachment and helps children feel they can trust and bond with the world around them.

  • A sense of ownership and control, Snug belongs to the child alone, giving them something reliable and entirely theirs amidst a changing environment.

  • Support for emotional wellbeing,  helping children process feelings and navigate new relationships with carers, peers, and family.

Snug doesn’t replace family or carers, but it supports healthy attachment and the building of positive relationships, giving children something they can call their own as they adjust to change.

Snug is part of a wider effort to support children in care. You can find out more about the project and ways to help on our Donate page

Every child deserves comfort. Every child deserves a Snug.

Snug’s First Night

Snug’s First Night tells the story of a child’s first night in care, showing how Snug helps them feel settled, comforted, and ready to start forming relationships in a new environment.

The book helps:

  • Children understand and express their feelings.

  • Carers and professionals support children’s emotional wellbeing and attachment needs.

  • Everyone see that adapting to care takes time, and that small comforts like Snug can make a big difference in helping children feel connected and in control.
